The Rolex Explorer II 226570, however, introduced a departure from it’s heritage: removing the floating/mystery hands found on the black . Today, I go hands-on with both the black and white dial reference Rolex 226570 Explorer II models, which refine but don’t revolutionize the classic sports watch formula. Rolex entirely updated the dial, case, movement, and bracelet in a watch that nevertheless fits more or less the same profile as the outgoing 216570 Explorer II models. In terms of design, the main changes are the different proportions of the lugs and the bracelet. The lugs are refined and the bracelet is widened. In addition, the case middle is slightly slimmer while the crown guard offers a more angular profile.
While this current modern variant we have here has the larger case size, I will say that the slender tapered lugs, and overall slim thickness of the case are perfection. For what is considered a “larger” Rolex watch it really is not that far off the mark due to these design factors. With the reference 216570 version (produced from 2011-2021), it may have to do with the length/width of the lugs or the case thickness, it somehow doesn't feel right. The latest version feels honestly perfect. The reference 226570, feels like a larger watch overall then before but more comfortable for sure. In this area current design is improved. When considering an alternative strap, it’s essential to ensure it fits the lug width of the Explorer II and, ideally, is designed to accommodate the specific curvature and shape of the Rolex case.
