The present watch belonged to Rear Admiral Amedeo Vesco (1914 -2002), who was one of the key figur of the original Decima Flottiglia MAS. Vesco took part in two operations against the British Naval Base in Gibraltar and was awarded the Silver Medal of Military Valour, not once but twice.
When I see the text "Marina Militare" on the dial, it reminds me of one of the reasons I got this watch. Unfortunately, I have always had a very bad retention when it comes to historical facts, and many years in high school I got failing grades in history. Our museum guide was wearing a stunning Ref. 6152/1 with “Marina Militare” dial, Rolex movement, double pencil hands (sharp heads).
Around 1936, the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai with the request of designing a watch resistant to extreme underwater conditions able to keep precise timing. The present 6152-1 is fitted with a coveted “Luminor Marina” sandwich dial.This is a very rare Panerai made for the Italian navy in the 1950s. The watch was made by Rolex. The case and 17 jewel movement are signed by Rolex. It is a reference 6152-1. The non-locking Brevet crown is rare and sought-after. The case dial and movement are 100 original. Just to be clear, the watch pictured above on the left is a vintage Panerai Reference 6152-1 which was made 58 years ago in 1955, and was an Italian Royal Navy military secret, and was never made available to the public. Artcurial will auction another Ref. 6152/1 with “Marina Militare” dial during the “Panerai only” auction on monday, december 8th in Paris (LOT 41).
